UPDATE: July 18, 2017 at 4:50 p.m.

Just when we had almost lost hope that Unicode had all but forgotten about the extremely important food category of emoji, news broke that we would be getting 56 new icons on our keyboard this summer. And it includes 13 culinary additions we can't wait to use.

Soon we'll be getting a pie, coconut, steak, pretzel, broccoli, sandwich, dumpling, fortune cookie, Chinese food take-out container, bowl of soup, canned food, chopsticks, and to-go cup. (Seriously, still no lime?!) But there's also a yogi, dinosaur, cursing face, and mermaid (!!!) in the new collection. Take a closer look:

It's unclear when all of these will roll out, as the consortium told USA Today that they would arrive with the release of Unicode version 10.0 — which we are expecting later this year but potentially as early as this month. Cross your fingers it's the latter so we can all get typing.

UPDATE: November 11, 2016 at 4:04 p.m.

Nearly a year after Unicode dropped renderings of new food emojis—like the very necessary bacon—we've finally got an update on what you can actually expect to start using and when. According to The Verge, we can expect to start using the extremely anticipated avocado emoji (plus pancakes and all the others we reported on below) when Apple's iOS 10.2 is released.

But now there are some awesome newbies to look forward to as well. Eater reports that there are 51 new proposals, including 14 culinary additions like pie, pretzel, coconut, steak, broccoli, cereal, salt shaker, leafy greens, hummus, sandwich, and canned goods. But there's also a bagel—Unicode just doesn't have a mock-up image available just yet. Check the rest out:

A lot of these have been part of Delish's Eatmojis for a while now—because we understand the struggle of a bagel-less text.

UPDATE: November 13, 2015 at 11:46 a.m.

Even though i0S 9 dropped and we've been graced with the long-awaited taco, burrito, hot dog, cheese wedge, popcorn, and champagne emojis, we're still looking to the horizon for what's next. And you can't really blame us—there are 22 states that are totally obsessed with emojis and even those who aren't probably still order Domino's with the 'za icon on Twitter.

Today, we got a hint at what the next batch of characters will be thanks to an update from Unicode, which notes that there are 74 potential candidates for the forthcoming release. They include a face-palm and fingers crossed, but the best of the bunch are the culinary characters: avocado, bacon, croissant, baguette, salad, whole eggs, peanuts, glass of milk, kiwi, and pancakes. The breakfast potential alone is amazing here. But then there's clinking champagne glasses and a glass tumbler filled with whiskey (hell yes!).

According to Unicode, we can expect to start using whichever characters make the cut by mid 2016. So take a closer look and start plotting out your pithy texts now.

The official mock-ups of the bacon, avocado, croissant, champagne, cucumber, carrot, and potato characters are here—and they're looking better than ever. Thanks to Emojipedia, we got a first glimpse at 'em:

As delish as these are, we're still chomping at the bit to see the official taco, burrito, and hot dog emoji.

Serious question: How have we gone this long without a bacon emoji? I can think of at least a dozen uses for it—because bacon makes everything better. Finally, we can stop dreaming and start expanding our emoji diets. Unicode, the development and design group single-handedly responsible for which emojis are added to the world's keyboards, is launching 38 brand-new characters next year. And seven of them are damn delish.

Along with bacon comes avocados (because everyone is completely obsessed), cucumbers, carrots, potatoes, clinking champagne flutes, and croissants. There are also drooling and nauseated faces on the way—you know, for when you're absolutely starving and when you've eaten way too much.

We're more than happy to welcome adorable owls and foxes to the list of newcomers (and the face-palm and shrug characters will likely find a permanent home in my most-recent tab), but I still have a bone to pick with the creators: Where the hell is my taco emoji?
